Several South Jersey Football Players Have Made College Commitments

In college football recruiting more and more players are making commitments early and that certainly goes for players from the seven-county South Jersey area.

This is the second year that the NCAA has allowed an early signing period for football. Division I recruits can sign a letter of intent from Dec. 19-21.

The later signing period is on Feb. 6.

More than ever, colleges are putting pressure on players to commit early. That’s not to suggest that every player from South Jersey was pressured to sign early, but schools are aggressive in their approach to get commitments as soon as possible.

So far several South Jersey players have made commitments.

West Deptford has two players who have made their college commitments. Senior tight end-defensive end Jason Collier (6-7, 280) has committed to the University of Pittsburgh. Last season he had 25 receptions for 388 y6ards and 3 TDs. On defense he had 39 tackles, three sacks and an interception.

West Deptford running back Kenny Lim has committed to Princeton. Lim (5-10, 195) rushed for 1,055 yards and 13 TDs on 115 carries. He also caught 12 receptions for 229 yards and two scores while also intercepting two passes.

Also committing to Princeton was St. Augustine linebacker Joe Bonczek (6-2, 220). Last season he had 119 tackles and 15 tackles for loss.

Yet another player who has made an Ivy League commitment is Delsea all-South Jersey running back Aidan Borguet, who will attend Harvard.

Borguet (5-9, 190) played mostly defense as a sophomore but broke out on offense last season. He

rushed for 2,208 yards (9.4 avg.) and 28 TDs on 236 carries in helping lead Delsea to the South Jersey Group 3 title.

While Borguet also plays in the secondary, he does most of his work at running back, where he was recruited by Harvard to play.

Two of South Jersey’s best linemen have chosen to accept scholarships from Temple. The two are Wisdom Quarshire (6-3, 305) of St. Joseph Hammonton, wo was recruited as a defensive lineman and Eastern’s Jermaine Donaldson 6-5, 320, was recruited on offense.

Quashire was a dominant performer for a St. Joseph team that went 12-0 and was the consensus No. 1 team in South Jersey.

Donaldson’s better days are ahead of him. He didn’t begin playing football until the eighth grade.

Two of New Jersey’s top cornerbacks, Donovan Bunch of Winslow Township and Camden’s Donald Williams, are headed to Rutgers.

Bunch had three interceptions last season while Williams contributed 46 tackles and 12 passes defensed.

No doubt there will be many other players who will make Division I commitments from South Jersey, which annually has its fair share of football talent.
