Part II: South Jersey Games of the Week
Here are some of the top high school football games this weekend:
Vineland (1-1) at Lenape (0-2), Friday, 7 pm.
Lenape has also opened with a tough schedule. The Indians opened with a 28-21 loss to reigning Central Jersey Group 5 champion South Brunswick and last week fell to consensus South Jersey top-five team St. Augustine. Vineland is a deceptive 1-1. The Fighting Clan played a great game against Williamstown on their opener, losing 24-7 in a game the winners scored 17 fourth quarter points. Last week the Clan beat Atlantic City, 21-0 as Ryan Shelton passed for 92 yards and a score and opened the scoring on a 4-yard run. Both teams were hit hard by graduation. The winner remains a viable contender for a South Group 4 playoff spot.

Mainland has already surpassed its win total from the last two seasons combined when the Mustangs were 1-9 each year. After opening with a 24-6 victory against Overbrook, Mainland defeated Absegami, 27-0 last week. Sean Carey had field goals of 33 and 37 yards in last week’s win. Cherry Hill West, which was 1-9 a year ago, is coming off last week’s 23-13 upset win over Pennsauken. The Lions had opened their season with a 34-13 loss to Cinnaminson. In the win over Pennsauken, Nick Arcarolli threw two touchdown passes and scored on a 1-yard run.

This is a rematch of last year’s SJ Group 2 semifinal that Haddonfield won, 15-8 enroute to winning the sectional title. Both teams have the ability to make another deep postseason run. After opening with a 34-13 win over Cherry Hill West, Cinnaminson defeated Pemberton, 18-0 last week. Cinnaminson senior running back Rashad Raymond has rushed for 411 yards (7.2 avg.) and 5 touchdowns. Head coach Frank DeLano’s defense fueled an opening 20-7 win over Pleasantville, but the offense got untracked in last week’s 41-7 win over Sterling. Last year Haddonfield lost to Sterling, 37-19 in the regular season before beating the Silver Knights, 17-7 the next week in the playoffs. Senior Chris Brown, who was sidelined last year due to injury, has rushed for 219 yards (7.8 avg.) and 3 touchdowns in Haddonfield’s two wins.
Holy Cross (2-0) at Delran (1-0), Friday, 7 pm.
Both teams appear to be improved. Delran, which was 3-7 last year, opened with a 21-0 win last week over Bishop Eustace. Holy Cross, which was 5-5, opened with a 29-19 win over Gloucester Catholic in a game the winning Lancers trailed 12-3. Last week the Lancers beat Bordentown, 35-0. Senior quarterback Andrew Paolini has rushed for 84 yards and a score and completed 14 of 22 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Both schools are located in Delran, to this is a big rivalry. Holy Cross won, 44-8 last year but this year should much closer.

This is a rematch from last year’s South Jersey Group 1 championship that Paulsboro won, 34-24. Don’t be surprised if these two have a rematch in this year’s final. Paulsboro followed its impressive opening 19-14 win at West Deptford with Saturday’s 46-0 win at Haddon Heights. Running back Tyhere Dowd has rushed for 158 yards (5.4 avg.) and one TD. Anthony Morina has a team-leading 18 tackles. Penns Grove has outscored its first two opponents, Pennsville and Woodstown, 93-3. Sophomore Nasir Robinson has rushed for 230 yards (8.5 avg.) and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Kavon Lewis has completed 7 of 10 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. Paulsboro will likely be the best defensive team Penns Grove has faced. Conversely, Penns Grove will be the best offensive team that the Red Raiders will meet.
