Two women, both teachers at Avon Elementary School in South Jersey, gave birth at the same hospital and died within days of each other.
Valerie Scythes, 35, had her baby first, and then died on March 28.
Two weeks later, 28-year-old Melissa Farah gave birth and then died on April 12.
Both were teachers at Avon Elementary and both had Caesarean sections at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury.
Hospital spokesman Richard Bellamente could not comment on the specific cases.
Both women were transferred to different hospitals where they later died, he said.
“We understand this is a very sad time, for very special people,” Bellamente said. “My very deep, very sincere sympathies to the families for their loss.”
Farah’s death certificate said she died from shock.
Attorney John Baldante represents Valerie Scythes’ family. Baldante said he is waiting for Scythes’ autopsy results.
"Right now no one knows if this is a coincidence or something inappropriate occurred. We’re waiting for the results of the final autopsy report before we can make a decision on that,” he said. “It’s an uncanny coincidence at best and who knows at worst.”
