Three New South Jersey Coaches of Note

There have been a number of coaching hires toward the end of the high school year. Here are some of the coaches who take over programs with strong histories.

Steve Everett – Willingboro football.
Everett replaces Reggie Lawrence, who has been a highly successful coach. Lawrence has been a winner at Camden, Jackson (where he guided the Jaguars to two sectional titles), Pennsauken and, yes, Willingboro, where he went 29-23. This past season, Willingboro slumped to 3-7 and Lawrence wasn’t rehired.

Everett formerly coached at Princeton High. He knows all about the strong football tradition at Willingboro, since he is a 1988 graduate. Everett then played football at West Virginia Wesleyan. He has been a head coach at Princeton High and Clayton, and also served three years as the head coach of Princeton University’s lightweight football team.

Lisa Steele – Paul VI girls’ basketball.
One of South Jersey’s top players of all-time has earned her first head coaching job as the head girls’ basketball coach at Paul VI. Steele is a 2004 graduate of Highland, who scored 2,204 career points. She replaced Bob Reilley, who resigned after one season as head coach.

Steele earned a basketball scholarship to George Washington University. After college, she was a college assistant at Mount St. Mary’s and Wagner College, but eventually wanted to return to the South Jersey area. For a number of years Steele has been involved in coaching with one of the top AAU programs, the Philadelphia Belles and last season she was a volunteer assistant at Timber Creek.

Steele takes over a Paul VI program that went 14-13 last season. The Eagles won an opening round South Jersey Non-Public playoff game over Bishop Ahr before losing to Camden Catholic in the quarterfinals. This is a strong program in a conference, the Olympic National, that is very difficult. Steele understands the caliber of competition, but says she is looking forward to the challenge of her first head coaching job.

Dan Boguszewski – Eastern football.
Boguszewski replaced Dan Spittal, who resigned in the spring. Eastern is coming off a 10-2 season, with both losses to Cherokee, including a 38-2 defeat to the Chiefs in the South Jersey Group 5 championship game.

In 14 seasons as head coach, Spittal had an 86-61 record and guided the Vikings to the 2003 South Jersey Group 4 championship.

Boguszewski is no stranger to title. He is a 2000 graduate of Overbrook, and was a key player on the Rams’ 1998 South Jersey Group 4 championship team that went 12-0 and capped its season with 21-14 win over Shawnee in the sectional title game.

Boguszewski comes with extensive assistant coaching experience. Most recently, he was an assistant at Paul VI and, before that, Triton, Burlington Township and Sterling.

He takes over an Eastern team that will be in the rebuilding mode, especially after the graduation of all-South Jersey quarterback Tom Flacco.

Eastern won’t be the favorite in the West Jersey Football League American Division this season, but should remain highly competitive in one of South Jersey’s toughest divisions.
