Gloucester Co. Institute of Technology The Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT), located in Sewell, is a vocational public high school for students who wish to receive specialized education beyond the typical subjects often taught in high schools. GCIT aims to provide a challenging curriculum, opportunities for exploration and discovery, technological resources to promote learning and activities to develop career-related skills, according to their website.

The school boasts many awards and accolades: New Jersey Department of Education Star School winner, Best Practice Award winner, National Service-Learning Leader, Tech Prep Grant winner, SkillsUSA medal winners, and highest county SAT verbal scores.

Gloucester County Institute of Technology students aspire to be doctors and nurses, welders, carpenters, actors, business leaders, auto technicians, chefs, cosmetologists, fire chiefs, law enforcement officers, plumbers, bakers, dancers, electricians, videographers, computer techs, athletes, and much more. The school offers four academies: Allied Health & Medical Science, Engineering, Finance & Business Management, and IT & Digital Communications. They offer career-technical programs in Construction Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Performing Arts – Dance, Performing Arts – Drama, and Transportation Technology.

The number of students has been increasing over the years too. This increase in enrollment has brought a change in the GCIT facility, including a new gymnasium, cafeteria, classrooms, and science laboratories, along with an updated media center and technology that allows real-time distance learning projects with experts throughout the country.

There has also been an increase in student activities, including sports and community service activities. Students have closer to 100 clubs to choose from, including Book Club, Cheerleading Club, Cosmetology Club, Debate Club, FCCLA, Fitness Club, HSPA Math Review Club, Key Club, Newspaper Club, School-Wide Musical, Scrapbooking, Spanish Club and Student Council.

Gloucester County Institute of Technology’s National Honor Society/National Technical Honor Society’s 2014-2015 officers are President Eric Kohn, Vice-President Diana Maybrook, Secretary Yasmine Carruthers and Treasurer Jonathan Paxson.

Athletics at the school include soccer, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, tennis, basketball, bowling, wrestling, cheerleading, softball, baseball, and golf.

Gloucester County Institute of Technology girls’ softball team kicks off their season with an away game at Delsea on April 1. Players this season include Kylie Lacerte, Amber Krecko, Jean Romer, Sierra Roasales, Brandi Chester, Alyssa Foti, Kristen Cosgrove, Caitlyn Newsom, Cheyenne Revoir, Gabby Glocker and Keiya Moncilovich.

Senior volleyball player Ashley McGinn (pictured) has received an athletic scholarship to play beach volleyball at Georgie State University. The four-year starter was named to the all-state team last fall and was also a three time 1st team all-conference player.

GCIT’s first girls soccer player to sign to a Division-I school is senior Haley Evans. She scored five goals and had 19 assists this year and will play for Coaster Carolina in the fall.

Congratulations to GCIT senior Gabrielle Bing for being recognized as a 2015-2016 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program recipient.

The School of Cosmetology students will host their 9th Annual Style-A-Thon at their New Image Salon on Saturday, March 28 from 9am-3pm. Services such as haircuts, blow drys, manicures, facials and waxing will be provided to the public and all proceeds will benefit the City of Hope Cancer Research Center.

“Legally Blonde the Musical” will be performed at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology on April 14-18 at 7pm in the theater. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students with ID. For more information, please call the box office at 856-468-1445 x2104.
