Singing and Science in South Jersey

by C.Cohen | Mar 21, 2002
Singing and Science in South Jersey Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the first collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of a young man named Joseph living in the land of Canaan. His father's favorite son, Joseph is perhaps a little spoiled. While the rest of his brothers are forced to wear sheepskin, he struts around in a fabulous rainbow-colored coat, a gift from his adoring father. The rest of Joseph's brothers aren't too pleased with the situation, and when Joseph goes so far as to tell them of a dream he has had in which their stacks of wheat bow down to his stack of wheat, they decide they have finally had enough.

Joseph's brothers abduct him, destroy his cherished coat, and toss him into a pit to perish. But when a group of Ishmaelites come trotting by on their donkeys at the last minute, the brothers have a change of heart and decide not to murder Joseph, but rather to sell him into slavery. Either way, he's out of their hair, and this way, they make a little extra cash. So they slaughter a goat, bloody up Joseph's coat of many colors, and return to their father, feigning great sorrow at the unfortunate death of their poor brother Joseph.

Joseph, however, will not be put down so easily. After being sold to an Egyptian property owner and serving a brief stint in prison, he uses his dream-reading abilities to secure an interview with the Pharoah who is so impressed with the young man that he immediately appoints him Minister of Agriculture. Years later, when a severe famine hits the land, Joseph's brothers come begging for employment. Realizing that they don't recognize him, Joseph decides to stage a little surprise for his would-be murderers before he allows everyone to live happily ever after.

If you are interested in some New Testament stories, take the family to see Godspell. Back by popular demand for a limited engagement, Haddonfield Plays and Players has revived it's moving adaptation of one of the biggest Off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time, just in time for the Spring holiday season. If you’re not already familiar with it, Godspell is a musical based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew--it is a reflection and celebration of life lessons told through parables and storytelling. It boasts one of Stephen Schwartz' most recognizable scores with such songs as "All Good Gifts", "Prepare Ye The Way Of the Lord", and the international hit "Day By Day".

Godspell is playing on March 21 at 7:30pm, and Friday and Saturday at 8pm. Please call the box office at (856) 429-8139 to reserve your tickets ahead of time! The Box office is open Tuesday thru Thursday, 9am to 12:30pm and 6:30pm to 8:30pm, and Friday 3pm to 6pm. Haddonfield Plays & Players is located on South Atlantic Avenue in Haddonfield, NJ.

On Saturday, WXPN's Mike "The Science Guy" Weilbacher presents Oceans in Motion at the Appel Farm Arts and Music Center in Elmer, NJ. An exciting production bringing a tidal wave of fun to Appel Farm! Featuring fast-moving songs, group poems, and movement stories, the show celebrates the many wondrous creatures of the ocean. Mike orchestrates the entire audience into becoming zooplankton, a coral reef, a kelp forest, and more. Join in on the jaw-chomping, teeth-gnashing hit, "I am a Shark!" If you caught last season's Rollickin' Dinosaur Revue, you won't want to miss this!

The show begins at 2pm; tickets are $7 in advance, $9 on the day of the event. For more information, call the Box Office at 1-800-394-1211.

For something completely different, families might enjoy checking out the Corielle Institute Science Fair. Held at Camden County College, it is the only science fair for Burlington, Camden and Gloucester County students in grades 6 - 12. Public viewing of the fair’s entries is on Saturday, March 23, from 1:30 - 3:15. This is a great opportunity to see what our aspiring scientists have done, and to inspire future scientists! For more information, call (856)757-4834.
