Strong NFL Representation from South Jersey
The first week of the NFL season showed once again the talent that South Jersey has produced. South Jersey products made a strong representation on NFL rosters.
There are 18 players who graduated from schools in the seven-county South Jersey area, who were on NFL rosters during the opening week of the season.
For this list, we are only including players who graduated from South Jersey high schools so New Orleans rookie offensive lineman, Cesar Ruiz, who spent his first two years at Camden before transferring, isn’t on the list.
Several of the players were injured as noted below. One, former Millville star Ryquell Armstead of the Jacksonville Jaguars, is on the Reserve/COVID-19
Two rookies made their debut, Eagles linebacker Shaun Bradley via Rancocas Valley and Temple and Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor of Salem and Wisconsin.
Bradley had one tackle in the Eagles opening 27-17 loss to the Washington Football team. Taylor rushed for 22 yards on nine carries in the Colts 27-20 loss to Jacksonville.
Yet another rookie, Minnesota cornerback Harrison Hand from Cherry Hill West, didn’t play in the Vikings opening loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Former Glassboro star Juwan Johnson is another rookie on the roster. Johnson, who attended Penn State and then finished as a graduate transfer at Oregon, is on the practice squad of the New Orleans Saints.
He was a high school teammate of Eagles running back Corey Clement, the former Super Bowl standout now in his fourth season. Clement, who had an injury marred season a year ago that limited him to four games, opened with 19 yards rushing on six carries and had two receptions for two yards in the Eagles’ opening 27-17 loss to Washington.
The veteran of the group is Audubon graduate Joe Flacco, who is entering his 13th NFL season. Flacco is on the New York Jets roster, but he didn’t play in Sunday’s opening 27-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
He is still recovering from a neck injury but when healthy is expected to be the backup to San Darnold. Flacco spent his first 11 seasons with Baltimore, where he was a Super Bowl MVP from the 2012 season when he completed 22-of-33 for 287 yards, 3 TDs in the Ravens 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Another veteran from South Jersey who is on a new team is Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Mike Daniels from Highland.
Daniels spent his first seven seasons with Green Bay and last season played for Detroit. He stated in the Bengals opening 16-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers and had two tackles.
