A copyright owner may, by choice, register the copyright with the Copyright Office. Registration does not affect the validity of the copyright. An application and fee must be submitted to the Register of Copyrights.
Registration of a copyright affects the owner’s ability to collect certain categories of damages for infringement of a copyright, as well as the time frame for bringing a lawsuit based on infringement.
