Exclusive Rights Obtained by a Copyright

Generally, copyright ownership provides the sole authority to use or permit others to utilize the copyrighted material: (17 U.S.C. sec. 106; Copyright Office Circular 1)
  • to duplicate the work in copies or phonorecords;
  • to create another work based upon the copyrighted material ("derivative work");
  • to sell, distribute, lease or lend the work;
  • to perform the work if it is a work of literature, drama, movie, other visual image with sound, pantomime or choreographic work;
  • to display works of literature, music, drama, choreography, pantomime, sculpture, singular images from movies, audiovisual works and pictures;
  • to perform sound recordings by means of digital audio transmission.
