Copyright Renewal

For works that have been published or registered before January 1, 1978, it was once necessary to apply for a renewal in order to secure copyright protection for an additional forty-seven (47) years beyond the initial twenty-eight (28) year term of protection. This is no longer the case for works that are copyrighted between January 1, 1964 and December 31, 1977. All other works published or registered before January 1, 1978, must undergo a renewal registration during the first twenty-eight year (28) term of copyright protection in order to secure a second forty-seven year (47) term of protection. If renewal is not sought for this category of works, copyright protection is lost. (Copyright Office Circular 15).

Copyrights that have been obtained between January 1, 1964 and December 31, 1977 are eligible for automatic renewal for another forty-seven (47) year term. Thus, copyrights that fall within this category automatically receive a statutory period of protection lasting seventy-five (75) years. (Copyright Office Circular 15).
