New Jersey § 39:6A-4, 39:6A-3.1 - Personal Injury Protection Coverage
When a person is injured in an automobile accident, there are generally medical and even hospital expenses that must be paid. Personal Injury Protection Coverage is a part of automobile insurance that pays for medical bills and expenses for injuries suffered in an automobile accident, no matter who is at fault for the accident.
PIP Basic Information
All New Jersey automobile insurance policies provide for payment of medical bills for injuries suffered in an automobile policy. Personal Injury Protection coverage or PIP as it is more commonly called, covers:
- A driver when driving a vehicle, riding in a vehicle or getting in or out of a vehicle;
- Anyone living in the driver’s household that does not have their own automobile insurance that is riding in a vehicle, getting in or out of a vehicle, or using a vehicle; and
- A pedestrian who is hit by a vehicle or hit by something thrown from or falling off a vehicle.
