Tort Claims - What is a Public Entity?
New Jersey Statute ยง 59:1-3 - Definitions


A person intending to sue a public entity for an injury must give ninety days notice.

A public entity is:

  • The State of New Jersey or any office, division or department of the State;
  • A county in the state;
  • A municipality or town in the state;
  • A district in the state;
  • A public agency or public authority of the state; and
  • Any employee of any of the above.
