Adoptive Parents to be Indicted

by NBC10/AP | May 5, 2004
Adoptive Parents to be Indicted Grand jurors in Camden County have had their say in a case that raised questions about New Jersey's child welfare system.

A couple accused of starving their four adopted sons were indicted Wednesday.

Raymond and Vanessa Jackson were charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment in October after their 19-year-old adopted son, Bruce, was found foraging for food in a neighbor's trash. The teen weighed only 45 pounds.

Authorities found three younger adopted boys in the family's home who were undersized.

Officials said the boys were fed uncooked pancake batter and resorted to eating wallboard.

The Jacksons said the boys had eating disorders that predated their placement with the family.
