AC One of `Best Action Beaches`

The initial impression of Atlantic City is the glitz and glitter of a dozen casinos, new shopping areas and an energetic nightlife. But a closer look reveals the original reason for Atlantic City’s existence – miles of free, clean white- sand beaches, complete with beach bars, beach concerts and a variety of beach- and ocean-related activities.

Those are the very reasons that Atlantic City’s shores have been recognized as a great “action beach.” Travelocity, one of the foremost authorities in travel, last week unveiled its newest top ten list on the Travelocity Web site.

The list of “Action Beaches in the U.S. and Nearby” is dedicated to “sandy spots where activities and people come together, and there is a palpable vibe,” according to Amy Ziff, Travelocity editor-at-large.

Ziff cites Atlantic City for its recently-completed beach replenishment and dune project, the wide variety of activities that are available (“volleyball, sailing, surfing, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking and surfing,” the Web site states), and the casino action that’s just steps away from the “sugary, white-sand beach.”

According to Jeff Vasser, executive director of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, “Thousands of people have enjoyed our clean, free beaches for 150 years, and they are a vital part of the Atlantic City experience.”

Vasser touts the newer, wider beaches as an asset, providing a better landscape for Atlantic City’s four summertime beach bars, beach concerts and other activities. “It’s also an honor to be on a list with other world-class beaches such as St. Thomas, South Beach and Negril.

As one of the top destinations in the U.S., we’re happy to see we are receiving this type of recognition,” Vasser said.
