Sybil Cohen (pictured)
Washington Township
Cohen, an art teacher at Washington Township High School, has been selected to participate in the University of Pennsylvania’s 2015 Phila-Nipponica Project where she will travel to Japan for 18 days this summer. The program, “Preparing to Teach about the Religious Life in Japan,” is designed to strengthen educators’ understanding of Japanese culture. Cohen was recommended for the project by Bob Frampton, the district visual and performing arts supervisor.

Lewis Lazarow
Moorestown
Lazarow, a Moorestown High School English teacher, was featured on NJEA’s television program, Classroom Close-up, NJ, an Emmy award-winning show that highlights original and creative projects in New Jersey schools. The segment focused on Lazarow’s War and the Fantastic class, a class that connects wars that took place in history and wars that took place in fantastical literature, and how he incorporates his experiences at the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival into the classroom.

Richard Perry
Haddonfield
Perry was selected to be one of only 100 superintendents across the country to be a part of the nationwide educational summit at the White House where he got to meet President Obama. More than 1,200 superintendents petitioned to be a part of this and out of the 100 accepted, Perry was the only one from South Jersey. Talks for the summit were relating to the ConnectED program that looked to close the technology gap between different schools.

Michelle Scheffer
Medford
Shawnee High School’s counselor was named Shawnee’s Educational Services Professional of the Year. Scheffer was surprised in her class by Principal Matthew Campbell, who acknowledged her for her dedication and hard work with the school.

Greg Gagliardi
Cherry Hill
Cherry Hill East’s newspaper adviser was named a Distinguished Adviser by the Dow Jones News Fund for 2014. The committee accepts nominations from across the country for teachers who have managed exceptional school papers, and Gagliardi was one of only four other teachers in the nation to be acknowledged in their category.
