Stags` Leap 1998 Syrah

by Robert Whitley | May 10, 2001
Stags` Leap 1998 Syrah, Napa Valley ($25) - The brilliance of winemaker Robert Brittan is apparent at every nuance. Yes, this is a rich, powerful wine, but it`s the subtleties that take it to another level. The hints of white pepper and anise, the aroma of smoked meats, the layers of fruit complexity (red raspberry, blackberry, blueberry) and the gentle whiff of violets. Brittan blends a small percentage of petite syrah and viognier, a rich, floral white wine, to achieve the completeness he desires. Consider it a job well done. Rating: 93.
