South Jersey Football Preview Part II
Highland (1-1) at Moorestown (2-0), Friday, 7. Highland bounced back from an opening 26-20 loss to Woodrow Wilson to defeat Cherry Hill West, 23-15 last week. The loss to Wilson means Highland will need help if the Tartans have designs of defending their WJFL Royal Division title. Both Highland and Moorestown were playoff teams last year and both figure to be so again. Moorestown received a key 59-yard punt return from Nick Cartwright-Atkins in last week’s 15-7 win over Seneca.
Holy Cross (1-1) at Cinnaminson (1-1), 7 Both of these WJFL Liberty Division teams are looking to rebound from non-divisional losses to WJFL Colonial teams. Holy Cross lost 38-7 to Haddonfield. The Lancers scored first before Haddonfield did the rest of the scoring. Cinnaminson lost to Sterling last week 21-0. Last season it was Cinnaminson winning the division with a 5-0 mark and that included a 22-0 win over Holy Cross. Both teams are considered Liberty contenders this season. Cinnaminson already owns a win over another Liberty contender Willingboro. The winner of this game will clearly be in the Liberty driver’s seat.
Salem (1-1) at Penns Grove (2-0), Saturday, noon. What is going on with the Penns Grove offense? The Red Devils have scored 120 points in their opening two wins over Deptford and Haddon Heights. They have also allowed 42 points, and the defense will be tested against Salem. Of course, stopping Penns Grove could be a daunting task. Sophomore quarterback Kavon Lewis has thrown for 637 yards and six touchdowns. Senior Samej Moore has rushed for 207 yards (7.4 avg.) and five touchdowns. Junior Tyreke Brown has 13 receptions for 340 yards and five touchdowns. Salem, last year’s SJ Group 1 finalist, has been in two nail-biters. The Rams opened with a 20-19 win over Glassboro and last week lost to Burlington City, 36-34.
Ocean City (1-0) at Cedar Creek (1-1), Saturday 1. Ocean City started the season with a 26-6 win over fellow SJ Group 3 team Oakcrest. The Red Raiders had a bye this past week but will face a Cedar Creek team that has reloaded after last season when they went 10-2 and lost to West Deptford in the SJ Group 2 championship. The Pirates are coming off a 28-20 loss to Delsea, which was a South Jersey Group 3 finalist last year and lost just 39-36 to South Jersey' stop team Timber Creek. That shows that this is once again a highly competitive Cedar Creek team.
Pennsauken (1-1) at Cherry Hill West (0-2), Saturday, 6. This is a game where a few points could be scored. Pennsauken is coming off a 51-40 loss to Triton. While it may be no consolation, Cherry Hill West is among the better 0-2 teams in South Jersey. The Lions lost their opener, 31-28 against Seneca and last week suffered a 23-15 defeat to Highland. West would need to win this if the Lions want to keep their realistic SJ Group 4 playoff hopes alive, especially since they play Camden Catholic at the playoff cutoff date West junior quarterback Monte Williams has rushed for 66 yards and a score and passed for 239 yards and two touchdowns. He is capable of breaking out and the Pennsauken is aware of Williams after the Lions beat the Indians 49-27 last year.
