Destin a Bright Spot for Rutgers Camden
This has been a difficult basketball season for men’s team at Rutgers Camden, but the Scarlet Raptors have had some bright spot, beginning with Collingswood product Isaac Destin. The 6-foot-4 junior entered the week not only leading Rutgers Camden in scoring, but with a 16.3 average he was the third leading scorer in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. He was also third in rebounding, averaging 7.8 per game.
Even more impressive is that he was third in the NJAC in field goal percentage (.584)
The NJAC is one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the country for virtually every sport and basketball is no exception.
Rutgers Camden began the week 3-14 overall and 1-10 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raptors have talented players but it’s difficult to keep up with the depth in the NJAC.
Rutgers Camden was averaging 72.3 points per game in its first 17 contests, but the problem has been on the defensive end, where the Scarlet Raptors were allowing 82.4 points per game. That was ninth in the 10-team NJAC.
The Scarlet Raptors had three players in the NJAC’s top 22 in scoring. Besides Destin, junior Anthony Harris, from Philadelphia’s Electrical and Technology Charter was fifth (15.3 ppg) and junior Vincent Anfield, a 5-10 junior from Rancocas Valley, was 22nd (11.6 ppg.)
Marcus Taylor, a 6-0 senior from Sterling, was sixth in the NJAC in assists (3.5 per game), 17th in NJAC in rebounding (5.6 per game). He was also fourth on Rutgers Camden in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game.
Destin was the team MVP last season and he has picked up where he left off a year ago. As a sophomore he averaged 14.5 points and 6.8 rebounds.
At Collingswood he was a two-time first-team all-South Jersey selection in both basketball and volleyball.
The highlight in the first half of the conference schedule was a 72-71 win over Montclair State. Anfield was on fire, scoring 31 points. He hit 11 for 16 from the field, including 7 of 8 from three-point range.
Adding to the storyline is that Anfield played last season at Montclair State. This was a Montclair State team that had won six in a row and fell to 11-4 with the loss.
That was a career high for Anfield, whose previous best at Rutgers Camden was 24 points.
This is a Rutgers Camden team that is relying heavily on a strong junior class, so the Scarlet Raptors look to learn from this year’s difficult season and progress with many people who will be back next season.
