Football Preview: South Jersey Football Bowl
There are three bowls games to conclude the South Jersey football season, matching South Jersey champions against the Central Jersey champs, Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
Here is a look at the games:
Group 3: Woodrow Wilson (9-3) vs. Rumson-Fair Haven (9-2), Saturday, 1 pm
Wilson had an impressive 22-14 win over top seeded Burlington Township to win the South Jersey Group 3 title, but the Tigers then fell to rival Camden, 39-28 on Thanksgiving. Winning the battle for the city of Camden is like another player game, so it will be interesting to see how the Tigers will rebound. Senior Nick Kargman has thrown for 3,668 yards and 38 TD, according to, but the running game for Wilson could be a key. Junior Muheem McCargo has rushed for 876 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Of course, the passing game can’t be discounted. Stanley King, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound Louisville recruit, came up big in the win over Burlington Township with seven receptions for 110 yards and a TD. He has caught 72 passes for 1,339 yards and 13 TDs. Junior linebacker Fadil Diggs, is considered one of the top players in the state. He has 12 sacks and is also a threat at tight end.
Rumson senior Alex Maldjain has rushed for 1,529 yards and 23 TDs, according to stats provided in In Rumson’s 42-35 win over Somerville, he rushed for 281 yards and 4 TDs on 50 carries. QB Collin Coles has thrown for 1,222 yards and 13 TDs.
Group 2: Haddonfield (12-0) vs. Hillside (11-0), Saturday, 4 pm
Haddonfield is the No. 1 team in South Jersey. No. 2 Williamstown lost its bowl game, so the Bulldogs should claim the top spot with a win. Haddonfield could also stay on top with a win, but the Bulldogs would like to leave no doubt.
Senior Jay Foley has completed 91 of 156 passes for 1,591 yards and 23 TDs, according to the Bulldogs stats on His twin brother Johnny Foley, has 20 receptions for 407 yards and 7 TDs. Fellow senior Davis Smith has 20 receptions for 465 yards and five TDs. Smith also has 69 tackles and a team-high five interceptions from his cornerback position. Senior Chris Brown has rushed for 797 yards and 6 TDs on 140 carries. Classmate Gabe Klaus has three sacks, including three in the Bulldogs 23-12 South Jersey Group 2 title win over Camden.
Hillside had no trouble beating Manasquan, 36-10 in the Central Jersey championship. Junior James Louis has rushed for 918 yards and 11 TDs on just 67 carries. Gavin Melendez has thrown for 1,725 yards and 20 TDs and Nahree Biggins has been a big-play receiver with 18 receptions for 471 yards and 6 TDs. The Comets have won their three tournament games by a combined 96-13 score.
Group 4: Shawnee (6-6) vs. Long Branch (11-1), 7 pm
Don’t look at the record with Shawnee because the Renegades are hot, having won four in a row. Even though Shawnee entered the postseason with a 2-6 record, many feared the Renegades due to their difficult schedule. The Renegades have prospered since moving Joe Dalsey from quarterback to his more accustomed running back position.
Dalsey has rushed for 552 yards and 13 TDs, according to His replacement at quarterback, freshman Matt Dalsey, has completed 46 of 79 for 548 yards and 6 TDs. Two-way back Jon Searcy has 40 receptions for 524 yards and 4 TDs. He also has 52 tackles and 6 interceptions.
