A Look at the South Jersey Wrestling Regional Champions

The NSIAA wrestling individual championships are this weekend in Atlantic City and it is one of, if not the best attended high school events of the season.

Reaching Atlantic City is a great feat, and to earn one of the 14 state titles, is a truly daunting task.

Another difficult challenge is winning a regional championship. Wrestlers from the seven-country South Jersey area, participate in Regions 6, 7 and 8.

Region 6 (at Jackson Liberty)
132: Bryan Miraglia, Delran, dec. Jack Nies, Ocean Township, 5-2.
138: Craig Cook, Burlington Township, won by forfeit over Alex Poniros, Ocean Township.
220: Jajuan Hayes, Bordentown, dec. Billy Borowsky, Point Pleasant Boro, 12-4.

Region 7 (at Toms River North)
132: Andrew Clark, Collingswood, dec. Cooper Pontelandolfo, Cherokee, 10-8.
145: Lucas Revano, Camden Catholic, dec. Declan Skelly, Haddonfield, 23-8.
152: George Worthy, Paulsboro, dec. Paul Jakub, Howell, 7-3.
160: Corey Fischer, West Deptford, dec. Joseph Wilson, Pemberton, 2-1 (tie breaker).
182: Santino Morina, Paulsboro, dec. Christian Murphy, Howell, 9-2.
195: Anthony Franden, Eastern, dec. Robert Damerjian, Moorestown, 8-2.
HWT: Max Sullivan, Cherry Hill West, dec. Matthew Cruz, Gloucester, 2-1 (tie breaker).

Region 8 (at Egg Harbor Township)
106: Ryan DeFoney, St. Augustine, dec. Ty Whalen, Clearview, 10-0.
113: Carmen Giumarello, Clearview, dec. Jayson Scerbo, Southern Regional, 3-1.
120: McKenzie Bell, Kingsway, dec. Nicholas DiGiacomo, Timber Creek, 9-0.
126: Hunter Gandy, Woodstown, dec. Kameron Jenkins, Timber Creek, 6-5.
132: Finnegan McFadden, Kingsway, dec. Justin Cariss, Highland, 6-5.
145: Jack Prendergast, Woodstown, dec. Jurius Clark, Highland, 16-4
160: Jacob Rodriguez, Clayton, dec. Raymond Weed, Absegami, 4-2 (sudden victory).
182: Mike Misita, St. Augustine, pin Curtis Thomas, Delsea, 3:50
195: Zane Coles, Pitman, dec. Keevon Berry, Oakcrest, 10-9 (tie-breaker)
220: Tyreke Brown, Penns Grove, pin J.T. Cornelius, Southern Regional, 5:47.
HWT: Deshon Alexander, Overbrook, dec. Nick Sannino, Ocean City, 9-2.

One of the top matches was Pitman’s Coles winning the 195-pound title over Keevan Berry in a battle of unbeatens in Region 8. Coles improved to 39-0 while Berry fell to 32-1.

The South Jersey wrestler who had to overcome the most was Collingswood’s Andrew Clark in his 10-8 title in the Region 7, 132-pound championship bout. Clark overcame and 8-0 deficit. The football quarterback along with playing in the secondary at Collingswood, Clark was named the Region 7 Most Outstanding Wrestler.

A junior, Clark had earned his 100th win late in the regular season.

Another football player won the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award in Region 8, Penns Grove’s Tyreke Brown. Headed to Sacred Heart on a football scholarship, earned a pin in the 220-pound championship.

Many of these champions will be major contenders for this week’s state championships.
