High Seeds Prospered in the South Jersey High School Baseball Tournament
In the recently completed South Jersey baseball championships, the higher seeded teams lived up to their billing for the most part.
One exception would be in South Jersey Group 4, where top seeded Shawnee lost in the first round to Egg Harbor Township.
In fact Group 4 had the lowest seeded South Jersey champion, No. 3 Eastern.
The top seeds that won sectional titles were Glassboro in Group 1, St. Augustine in Non-Public A and Gloucester Catholic in Non-Public B.
The other champions were No. 2 seeds, West Deptford in Group 2 and Cherry Hill West in Group 3 and both those teams beat top seeds to earn the title.
West Deptford had an impressive 5-3 win over top seeded Haddonfield. During the regular season Haddonfield beat West Deptford twice, 5-0 and 5-4.
With Jack Murphy earning the win and sophomore Brian Gallagher pitching 1 1/3 shutout innings to earn the save. West Deptford then saw its season end with Monday’s 8-4 loss to Point Pleasant Boro.
Cherry Hill West beat top seeded Triton, 6-3 to win the South Jersey Group 3 title. The Lions were South Jersey finalists last year, losing to Seneca.
This year West was trailing Triton 3-2 before scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning, with the big blow a two-run home run by Rider recruit Scott Shaw.
West saw its season end on Monday with a 4-3 state semifinal win over Wall.
Eastern beat Olympic Conference American Division rival Cherry Hill East, 7-2, to win the South Jersey Group 4 title.
The Vikings then earned a berth in the state final with Monday’s 1-0 victory over Manalapan. Eastern will face Ridgewood in Saturday’s 7 p.m. state Group 4 final at Veterans Park in Hamilton.
Glassboro beat four teams by a 43-5 win to earn the South Jersey Group 1 title. The Bulldogs then beat Middlesex, 3-0 in the state Group 1 semifinal.
Glassboro will now meet Emerson Boro in Saturday’s 10 a.m. Group 1 state championship at Veterans Park in Hamilton
St. Augustine won its fourth straight South Jersey Non-Public A title with a 5-3 victory over St. Joseph Metuchen. Senior Jayson Hoopes, one of the top pitchers in South Jersey, earned the win.
Nobody was more dominating than Gloucester Catholic in winning a South Jersey title. The Rams won their three South Jersey playoff games by a combined 32-1 after beating Trenton Catholic, 11-0 in the SJ Non-Public B championship game.
