Gasoline Spill Threatens Cherry Hill Area CHERRY HILL, N.J.: June 26, 2001 — A tanker spilled hundreds of gallons of gasoline early Wednesday morning at the Citgo Station in Cherry Hill. The station is located on Route 70 and Saw Mill Road, and the closing of Route 70 caused a traffic backup for miles. Some of the gas spilled into the sewer system, causing environmental and safety concerns for the area.

Route 70 was closed down for about three hours Wednesday morning between Kingston Drive and Kings Highway as the result of a gasoline spill. The Citgo Station on Route 70 West in Cherry Hill was getting a gasoline delivery at 8:12 a.m. when the valve on the tanker truck failed and between 150 and 200 gallons of gasoline poured out and into a nearby storm drain. The truck belongs to Arfa Oil of Palmyra, New Jersey. Fire fighters, hazmat crews, state police, NJDOT and the Department of Environmental Protection responded to the spill. Foam was been used to suppress the vapors, but the gasoline flowed south through a pipe under the Barclay Farms development and into a creek about a quarter mile away. Crews worked to contain the gasoline with foam which will be vacuumed from the creek.
