Cheney Gets Pacemaker To control potentially dangerous irregular heartbeats doctors implanted a dual-action pacemaker in Vice President Dick Cheney`s chest Saturday and he is be able to carry on in his job.

Cheney, in the hospital for treatment of his heart disease for the third time since the November election, was to be released later Saturday. By lunchtime, he was out of his mild sedation, eating shrimp salad and getting ready to go home. Doctors said he can go back to work Monday. No ill effects were foreseen except for temporary soreness around the implant.

President Bush said he saw no need to lighten duties on a vice president in whom he has invested unusual influence and trust. Cheney plans to spend at least two weeks in August at his Jackson Hole, Wyo., home, where he likes to fish.
