South Jersey Football Games of the Week
This is the first full week of division play in South Jersey, and these games will start defining the contenders.

Thursday

West Deptford (2-0, 0-0 WJFL Patriot) at Collingswood (2-0, 0-0), 6 p.m. West Deptford hasn’t been challenged in beating Cooper Kipp Academy and Pennsville by a combined 93-21 score. Last year West Deptford beat Collingswood, 46-6, so the Eagles will be the solid favorite. Collingswood is coming off a 27-14 win over Overbrook. Senior Caden Luby has rushed for 173 yards and two scores in the Panthers’ two wins.

Friday

Bergen Catholic (2-0) at Winslow Township (1-1), 6 p.m. This could be for the No. 1 spot in the state. Bergen Catholic has two quality non-conference wins, opening with a 22-21 victory over East St. Louis, Illinois, in a game matching nationally ranted teams at Ocean City’s Battle At the Beach. Last week the Crusaders won, 21-14 at West Boca Return. Senior safety Jordan Thomas, an Ohio State commit, is the defensive leader for Bergen Catholic. Winslow Township opened with a 35-14 loss to nationally ranked IMG Academy in the Battle at the Beach. Last week the Eagles routed Highland, 47-0 as junior Jalen Parker threw three touchdown passes.

Millville (0-2, 0-0 WJFL American) at Mainland (1-1, 0-0), 6 p.m. Millville was a preseason Top 10 South Jersey team, but the Thunderbolts have lost to two quality teams, 33-14 to Rancocas Valley and 26-21 last week to Atlantic City. Mainland opened with a 25-8 loss to Atlantic City before beating Hammonton, 42-7. Last week as Jake Blum scored three touchdowns – on a 5-yard touchdown reception, a 3-yard scoring run and a 33-yard TD on an interception.

Cherokee (2-0. 0-0 WJFL American) at St. Augustine (2-0, 0-0), 6 p.m. St. Augustine opened with a 24-14 win at Ohio’s Canton McKinley and then last week shut out Paul VI, 26-0 as junior Roman Coney rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns. Cherokee opened with a 27-26 win over Middletown South before beating Lenape, 42-21 last week. Junior Brendan Markovsky has already rushed for 385 yards and six touchdowns. This will be a battle of the running games.

Haddonfield (1-1, 0-0 WJFL Continental) at Willingboro (1-1, 0-0), 7 p.m. Haddonfield rebounded from an opening 36-20 loss to defending state Group 1 champ Glassboro by beating Woodbury, 41-0 last week. Both Haddonfield and Willingboro are considered contenders along with Paul VI and Seneca in the competitive Continental Division. Willingboro has played two close games, beating Rahway, 35-33 before losing last week to Camden Eastside, 14-7.

Washington Township (2-0, 0-0 WJFL Classic) at Delsea (2-0, 0-0), 7 p.m. Washington Township is among the top teams in South Jersey and wasn’t tested in opening wins over Hillsborough and Pennsauken. Last year Washington Township beat Delsea, 28-6. Delsea has two convincing wins, defeating Vineland and Woodstown by a combined 70-7 score, but this will be a major test against the defending Central Jersey Group 5 sectional champions.

Saturday

Rancocas Valley (2-0, 0-0 WJFL Colonial) at Camden Eastside (2-0, 0-0), 1

Eastside’s strength has been its defense, having beaten Triton, 21-7 and last week, Willingboro, 14-7. Last year Rancocas Valley beat Eastside, 42-6 and the Red Devils remain the favorite in this year’s meeting.
