Patriots Edge Sharks

For the second straight night, both teams saw solid pitching performances from both their starters and bullpens. Last night the game was scoreless until the Patriots scored two in the top of the ninth and went on to win 2-0 over the Sharks. Tonight the game was forced into extra innings after neither time could draw a run after the fifth inning. Camden starter Mike Busby allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, three walks and 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work. Entering the eighth, he turned to his bullpen to close out the Patriots. Ted Silva was first to take over for 1 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and three walks. Riversharks closer Jimmy Williams then took over and pitched two scoreless innings. The 12th inning would not fare the same for Williams and Camden. In his third inning of work, Williams allowed two runs to score on singles from rightfielder Kevin Dattola and first baseman Mike Glavine. Glavine`s single forced designated hitter Charles Poe in for the winning run. Jeff Love then took over for Williams and allowed Dattola to score on a wild pitch.
For the second straight night, Williams took the loss for Camden dropping his record to 1-7 for the season. Derek Dace picked up the victory, improving to 6-3 for the season and Kirk Griffin recorded his save for Somerset. Offensively, Camden managed eight hits from Patriots starter Robert Dodd and three Somerset relievers. Riversharks rightfielder Gil Martinez went 3-for-5 and scored a run, while shortstop Jesus Azuaje (1-for-5, two runs batted in and one run scored) would hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning.
Saturday, the Riversharks try to avoid a sweep when the series with the Somerset Patriots comes to an end. Camden will send left-hander Derek Root (6-5, 5.38) to battle right-hander Doug Walls (6-6, 3.59) and the first-place Patriots. Game time is set for 6:35p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 at Campbell`s Field. The Sharks will remain at home for six more games, including three-game series with Lehigh Valley (8/26-8/28) and the Atlantic City Surf (8/29-8/31).
