Sharks Topple Lehigh Valley 4-1

Camden starter Derek Root pitched one of his best outings of the year. He went seven innings, scattering eight hits and surrendering only one run. Root struck out four and walked only two before handing the ball over to reliever Steve Reed in the top of the eighth. Reed recorded two outs in the inning before being replaced by Sharks closer Jimmy Williams. Williams entered the game with two runners on, as the momentum began to shift toward Lehigh Valley. He accepted the challenge and struck out designated hitter Larry Bethea to end the threat. Williams then pitched a hitless ninth to record his 21st save of the season. Offensively for the Sharks, first baseman Dan Held led the way going 2-for-4 with one run scored and one run batted in. Also chipping in for the Sharks, right fielder Gil Martinez had two hits and one run batted in and leadoff man Brad Strauss was 1-for-4 with one run scored.
Lehigh Valley starter Rob Mattson earned his fourth loss of the season going seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits. Lehigh Valley shortstop Victor Gutierrez (2-for-5) produced the sole RBI for the Diamonds, driving in designated hitter Larry Bethea (1-for-4) in the top of the seventh inning.
Tomorrow the Riversharks look to Ryan Schurman (9-9, 3.37) to knock off Lehigh for the second straight night. To contend Schurman, the Diamonds will send Mark Seaver (7-8, 4.22) to the mound. Seaver, who began the year with Camden, will make his first start at Campbell`s Field since leaving the team. Tomorrow it will be Haddon Township and Brad Strauss night. The first 1,000 fans get a free post of Haddon Heights native and Riversharks lead-off man Brad Strauss as they enter the gates at Campbell`s Field.
