McGreevey Next NJ Governor

McGreevey Next NJ Governor TRENTON - Governor-elect McGreevey will set about organizing his government when he holds a noon news conference one day after his near landslide. The Democrat won 14 of the state's 21 counties. He beat Republican Bret Schundler two-to-one in Jersey City, where Schundler was mayor for nine years.

Speaking to supporters in East Brunswick last night, McGreevey pledged "a government for all the people, a government that is accountable to you and only you."

McGreevey's earnest and wooden campaign style earned him the name "robocandidate" in 1997 when he lost to Christie Whitman by one percentage point.

The 44-year-old Woodbridge mayor calls himself a "Jersey guy." But the lawyer has several advanced degrees from Ivy League schools.
