Battleship New Jersey Celebrates On Friday, December 7th beginning at 6:00 p.m. the Battleship New Jersey Memorial & Museum will host "Freedom Lights the Night," an event that commemorates the completion of the first phase of a state-of-the-art ship lighting system. Funding for the project has come from the Battleship Foundation.

The public is encouraged to take part in the festivities by donating an unwrapped gift for the Toys for Tots collection with drop-offs located along the Marina promenade. Home Port Alliance Board Co-Chairs Patricia Egan Jones and Senator John Matheussen will throw the ceremonial switch to light the night at 6:00 p.m. The Woodrow Wilson Jazz Band will provide musical accompaniment.

The date bears historical significance for the Battleship New Jersey. The keel was laid for our nation's most decorated battleship at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1940 and was launched on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the Pearl Harbor attack. The ship's sponsor was Mrs. Charles Edison, wife of the Governor of New Jersey and daughter-in-law of Thomas Edison.

"We are proud to host 'Freedom Lights the Night', sending a bright message to the surrounding region that the Battleship New Jersey Memorial & Museum is a must see venue on the Camden Waterfront," stated Home Port Alliance Board Co-chairs Jones and Matheussen.

The Battleship New Jersey Memorial & Museum is currently operating on its winter schedule, which is opened to the public seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Admission for adults is $10, children under 12 is $7, senior citizens and veterans with ID is $7 and there is no charge for active military in uniform or former crewmembers with ID.

Parking is provided in Lot #1 of the Tweeter Center, which is accessible from Mickle Blvd. The Battleship New Jersey Memorial & Museum is located adjacent to the Tweeter Center. Parking costs $6.
