SJ Schools - Sterling High School In this day and age if you don’t have a computer, you’re pretty much lost. Which only goes to say that if you don’t learn computer skills early, you’re going to be at a disadvantage. Sterling High School in Somerdale realizes this, and their Technology Education is the focus of this weeks’ article.

Educational technology at Sterling is school-wide, and the school has a local area network that houses students and staffs' network folders, a student records information database (SASI), and an electronic grade book software program (InteGrade Pro). The Internet is available on 100% of their computer workstations; there are a total of 515 multi-media computers in the building. The school uses Internet Explorer as its web browser and Microsoft Exchange Web Outlook for e-mail purposes. The school’s web page is housed on its own server, and Comcast provides the school with a high-speed, data communication line.

Computer labs are available for language arts, math, business, science, and Internet and database retrieval. The use of the Internet and electronic reference materials is emphasized by the school, and integrated throughout the district's curriculum.

Sterling High School offers specific courses in computer programming languages such as Visual Basic, C++, Java Scripting, and HTML as well as courses specifically targeted to teach industry-standardized software programs. These programs include Microsoft's Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, and FrontPage) and Data Cad.

Computer Technology isn’t Sterling’s only focus; the school also has its own TV Studio and offers courses in Communications Technology and Video Production. The Educational Cable Access Channel, SHS-TV Channel #19, airs special shows throughout the school year. These shows include plays, musical performances, athletic events, and interviews.

Courses in Technology Education at Sterling are organized into clusters to give the students a sense of direction and to prepare them for technical careers beyond high school.
