Most Wired Cities

Most Wired Cities A year ago, San Francisco dropped from first to second on the list of America's most-wired cities. That was big news, but so was Philly cracking the top 50 at number 36.

Yahoo Internet Life just published its May issue with this year's top 50. The new list puts Frisco back on top, and Philly's out – we're number 52. We asked some local web experts to analyze the decline.

Ironically, Philadelphia's web infrastructure is very good. For example, most internet content that travels between the U.S. and Europe passes through here. But experts agree that cutting the city wage tax will be a key to holding onto top IT graduates learning here then relocating elsewhere.

The revised tax law alone may be enough to make Philly a top 50 city again. But we could rise, or fall, pretty quickly depending on how seriously the city takes business and the web.

Meanwhile, Wilmington did surprisingly well in the survey, landing 34th on the list in a first-time appearance.
