SJ Skate Parks The summer's almost over; it's almost time to go back to school. There's no time like the present to hit the boards!! Here is a review of the local skate parks where you can bring your safety gear and your skateboards and in-line skates.

First we're off to Medford for the Medford Township Recreation Department’s Freedom Skate Park.

The Skatepark At Freedom Park is celebrating its 2nd anniversary. The facility is open to skateboarders and in-line skaters. Bicycles are prohibited.

This facility is approximately 30,000 square feet, and houses the following components. Starting Bank, Quarter Pipe with bump, Pyramid, Cement Block, Spine Ramp, S-Curve Ledge, Fun Box, Half Pipe, Quarter Pipe & Bank Ramp and a Quarter Pipe.

Most of the components are made of wood with "Skatelite Pro" laminated tops. All users aged 14 and younger are required to wear helmets, kneepads, and elbow pads. Those aged 15 and older must wear helmets.

Summer hours are 10am till dusk Monday through Saturday; noon until dusk on Sundays.

Passes are required to enter the park.Admission fees are as follows:

  • Daily: Residents - $5.00, Non-residents - $10.00
  • Quarterly: Residents - $15.00, Non-residents - $30.00
  • Annually: Residents - $50.00, Non-residents - $100.00
    Full excess medical insurance coverage is included in this fee.

    To purchase a pass, go to the Rec. Dept. at Cranberry Hall or the MENTAL skate shop at 5 Union Street. Permission Forms must be completed, and photos are taken for quarterly and annual passes, so the participant must be present when registering. Day passes are available at the skatepark.

    Next we head over to Moorestown for the Moorestown Vans Skatepark. This 37,000 plus sq. ft. skatepark is located inside the Moorestown Mall. The skatepark's features range from popular staples to the innovative and unique. They include:

  • A lounge area that includes kiosks with Internet connection to the Vans web site, televisions that will air Vans Triple Crown™ Series footage, a Sports Wall dedicated to Vans Triple Crown™ Series events, an arcade and a party room.
  • A competition-size vert ramp.
  • A 6,200 sq. ft. indoor cement street course that has a real downtown street feel with planters, fire hydrants, streetlights, hips, gaps, ledges, stairs, wall rides and brick pavers.
  • A wood street course designed for beginner to advanced skaters featuring ramps surfaced in Finland Birch.

    Session times are divided into two-hour blocks between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Skaters will pay between $11 and $14 a session, or purchase a one-year membership for fifty dollars that allows them to skate at a discounted session price, between $7 to $9, depending on the time of day.

    And last, we head over to Vert Planet in Pennsauken. This indoor facility houses Inline skating, skateboard and BMX areas, a pro shop as well as events through out the year. Rentals are available. For more information and directions, go to www.vertplanet.com.
