State to Invest 14M in Gloucester Co.

The State will invest more than $14 million in Gloucester County’s transportation system in the upcoming fiscal year, Governor James E. McGreevey announced today.

“We are committed to working in partnership with communities in Gloucester County and throughout New Jersey to improve not just State roads and bridges, but local and county transportation networks as well,” McGreevey said.

The Governor issued his comments while visiting the site of the Locke Avenue Bridge project in the Township of Woolwich and the Borough of Swedesboro.

“The project is an important component of our commitment to upgrade the infrastructure in Gloucester County,” McGreevey said. “We are replacing a one-lane movable bridge with a two-lane fixed structure.”

The project, which also includes improvements at the intersection of Locke Avenue and West Broad Street, is proceeding on schedule and is scheduled for completion in July of 2003.

McGreevey noted that the State and Gloucester County have also worked in partnership to fund the recently completed Cross-Keys bypass in Monroe and Washington Townships. The project improved a five-point intersection and is helping to provide access to the new interchange on the Atlantic City Expressway in Camden County.

In addition, the Governor said the proposed State transportation capital program for fiscal year 2003 includes improvements along Route 47 in Glassboro, Washington Township and Pitman; bridge improvements on Route 538 in Franklin Township and Route 130 in Logan Township; and important drainage improvements on Routes 40, 42, and 676.

“Traffic issues and safety concerns in one of New Jersey’s fastest-growing counties cannot and will not be put on hold as a result of the State’s fiscal challenges,” McGreevey said.
