FBI Canvassing Dive Shops

by 6 ABC-AP | Jun 6, 2002
FBI Canvassing Dive Shops The concern that the next terrorist threat could come by sea is creating a wave of FBI activity. Agents are canvassing dive shops and schools from Florida to the Jersey shore. They are asking specifically about customers and students of middle eastern descent.

The FBI is also compiling a database of every certified scuba diver in the country. Authorities are worried that terrorists could target ships by delivering explosives underwater.

It seems improbable that terrorists would plan an attack from underwater as trained scuba divers, but that is just what the FBI is preparing for. The FBI has been busy along the Jersey shore at dive schools like Atlantic Divers in Egg Harbor Township.

The FBI says that back on May 23rd it received a non-specific threat that terrorists could be learning scuba techniques to carrying out their schemes. So the FBI has gone up and down the Atlantic Coast checking out all of the dive schools it could find.

Agents want to know if anyone has purchased large amounts of oxygen tanks or tried to take scuba lessons without getting certified. The FBI also paid a visit to Kammerman's Marina in Atlantic City before Memorial Day – and it does not even offer dive lessons.

The U.S. Coast Guard cannot comment on this latest threat, but says it has kept a keen eye on the shores for almost nine months.
