Excessive Heat Advisory

by 6 ABC-AP | Jun 25, 2002
Excessive Heat Advisory The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat advisory for Monday for highly urbanized areas. Heat and humidity will be on the increase early this week as a Bermuda high sets up off the southern Atlantic coast and tries to keep a weak cold front from moving into the region.

Heat indices are expected to reach 100 degrees in highly urbanized portions of the Delaware Valley Monday afternoon. Some relief from the heat will be found in the southern Poconos, the higher elevations of far northwest New Jersey, and the New Jersey and Delaware coastlines.

A cold front is expected to come close to and stall over the region toward Tuesday morning. Scattered thunderstorms should precede the cold front Monday afternoon, possibly lingering into the evening. The front will move back as a warm front on Tuesday.

Little relief is expected for Tuesday, but for now heat indices are expected to be slightly below advisory or warning criteria reaching the lower to mid 90s.

An excessive heat advisory for highly urbanized areas is issued for heat indices of 100. Persons are advised to avoid prolonged work in sun or in poorly ventilated areas. Also keep plenty of liquids on hand and try to stay in an air conditioned environment. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic ailments are usually the first to suffer from the heat. Heat exhaustion, cramps, or in extreme cases heat stroke can result from prolonged exposure to these conditions.

Friends, relatives, or neighbors should check on people who may be at risk. At a minimum, pets need access to cool, fresh water and shade. Please do not leave anyone in a parked car for any length of time.

Here are some hot weather safety rules:
Make sure that your home or workplace is properly ventilated.
Use fans for cooling if air conditioning is not available.
Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing. Stay in the shade.
Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Be aware of the signs of and differences between heat exhaustion and potentially deadly heat stroke.
