Rutgers Receives State Funds

Rutgers Receives State Funds During a special ceremony in Trenton on Monday, July 22, Governor James McGreevey signed into law the Camden recovery bill, which includes an $11 million appropriation to the Rutgers-Camden campus as part of the vision to grow Camden as a premier University City.

“Rutgers would like to thank Governor McGreevey for his commitment to the City of Camden. We also would like to thank Senator Wayne Bryant and Assemblyman Joseph Roberts for their advocacy on behalf of the city, and the entire South Jersey legislative delegation for their steadfast support,” says Rutgers-Camden Provost Roger J. Dennis.

“We are pleased and gratified by the governor’s recognition that investment in Rutgers is an investment in the future of our state. This grant, which will be matched by Rutgers, will support our ongoing purchase and rehabilitation of nearby properties for the betterment of the campus and the community,” Dennis continues.

The support will allow Rutgers-Camden to expand its law school to include state-of-the-art teaching facilities that promote smaller class sizes; a mock courtroom; and enough space to increase its pro bono legal programs, which allow law students to provide free legal guidance to citizens who otherwise could not avail themselves of such service.

Rutgers-Camden also will seek to expand on-campus student housing, and to enhance its service to New Jersey’s business community through its Technology Incubator.

“It is both our duty and our privilege to serve as an engine for growth in the city and the region,” Dennis says. “Rutgers has a tradition of service in the City of Camden that will continue to grow through such activities as the LEAP University High School; our participation in the baseball stadium; our revitalization efforts on Cooper Street; the Rutgers-Camden Community Park; and the Camden Initiative for Children’s Literacy.

“We are honored to answer this historic call to service, and look forward to working in partnership with our colleagues at Camden County College, Rowan University, UMDNJ, Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, and Cooper Hospital as we identify and implement new opportunities to serve our neighbors and friends in our host city and across our state.”
