Listeria Cases in NJ The outbreak of Listeria infections in the Northeast appears to may have hit New Jersey. State officials say four people have died and seven others have been sickened by the infection caused by contaminated food since the end of June.

State Health and Senior Services Commissioner says analysis is being done to determine if the New Jersey cases were caused by the same strain of Listeria and are part of the wider outbreak.

New Jersey normally has between 20 and 30 cases a year.

Anyone can become infected, but those most at risk are pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Officials say to avoid soft cheeses and to cook food thoroughly. Those at risk may also want to heat cold cut meats before eating.
