Big John`s Pizza

Big John`s Pizza, at 524 N. Delsea Drive in Glassboro, is a clean and cheery little place that specializes in great-tasting, reasonably priced pizza, sandwiches and chicken wings. Located directly across from the Glassboro Playdrome, the restaurant caters to families as well as the students at nearby Rowan University. (College students receive 10 percent off regular priced menu items.)

After stopping in for lunch one recent afternoon, I was promptly greeted by Dennis Williams, Big John`s friendly manager (and nephew of one of its cofounders). Along with the Glassboro restaurant, the Big John`s Pizza franchise has been serving South Jersey for 30 years with its two other locations in Bridgeton and Vineland.

As I waited for my Mini Cheese Steak Sandwich ($2.25; $3.25, with fries and a small drink), I admired the shop`s wood-paneled walls, tasteful paintings and tidy booths. (Bonus for fresh-air aficionados: Big John`s is completely smoke-free.)

Fortunately, I didn`t have to wait long for my cheese steak. It was terrific, with tender steak, melted cheese and sweet peppers. Sadly, it was gone all too soon. (My waistline being what it is, I reluctantly refrained from ordering another.)

Besides the Mini Steak, other great sandwich choices include Cheese Steak ($4.10), Pizza Steak ($4.35), Mushroom Pizza Steak ($4.55), Pepperoni Pizza Steak ($4.55), Meatball Sandwich ($3.25), Cheeseburger ($2.25), Sweet Italian Sausage and Peppers ($3.70), and many more.

Naturally, Big John`s Pizza has pizza both white and traditional. Prices start at $1.25 for one slice and go up to $12.60 for the huge 24-slice Party Tray Pizza. Another specialty at Big John`s is Wings, which range in size from an order of five for $2.75 to a basket of 50 for $18.25.

Hours: Sunday: Noon - 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday - Saturday: 11 a.m. - Midnight
