Bluegill Cafe

There`s a new Lamberti`s in town and judging from a recent visit, the newest offering definitely lives up to the renowned name.

Bluegill Cafe, which was opened by Luciano Lamberti this past June in the Ritz Center, nicely complements the trendiness of the adjacent theater. But with its innovative dishes, attentive service and energetic ambiance, this eatery has the ability to attract the crowds all on its own.

Upon entering, we were immediately struck with the ultramodern, California decor. Unique chandeliers and furniture, vivid colors and stunning artwork as well as the upbeat music all contributed to the fun and lively atmosphere. It was after we looked at the menu, however, that we knew this truly was a noteworthy find.

The restaurant, described as a casual California seafood grill, offers a selection of interesting, health-conscious cuisine. Choices include: Pan-seared Wasabe Tuna with braised spinach, wild mushroom rice and oven-roasted mussels; Poached Salmon with herbs, potatoes and vegetables in a key lime and vanilla fish stock; and Coconut-Encrusted Chilean Sea Bass over sushi rice and dark rum plum sauce.

As we perused through the menu, we were presented with tortilla chips accompanied by hummus and salsa. The sauces were extremely tasty, and we found the chips to be a nice change from the bread typically served at other restaurants. After much consideration, I chose Grilled Herb Chicken ($6.95 for lunch), with crisp parma prosciutto, smoked gouda, wild mushroom and sage reduction and a mixed potato and corn smash. My mother opted for one of the daily specials: Dungeness Crab and Salmon ($12.95 for lunch) with a lemon butter thyme and a cocktail sauce.

Both dishes were extraordinarily delicious and quite different from our usual fare. The large portions and artistic presentations were equally impressive.

Although we chose to pass on dessert, the restaurant offers an array of specialty desserts (choices vary daily), flavored coffee, cappuccino and Italian sodas.

Bluegill Cafe does not have a liquor license, but customers are welcome to bring their own wine or beer. Takeout, party trays and banquet facilities are also available.

Bluegill Cafe Haddonfield-Berlin Road Ritz Center Voorhees 566-4225 Hours Sun. - Thurs.: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fri. & Sat.: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
