DiPaolo`s Red Lion Inn
The community landmark, which opened in 1923, has earned an impeccable reputation and developed a loyal following through the years. So when my friend Lori suggested it recently, I was more than anxious to give it a try.
As soon as we walked in, we knew it was going to be a memorable dining experience. We were immediately struck with the restaurant`s old-fashioned, country charm.
As friendly and inviting as the atmosphere is, however, I would say it`s the food that keeps people coming back again and again. The family-owned-and-operated restaurant sets itself apart from the competition by preparing its pastas and sauces fresh daily on the premises. It`s a difference you can definitely taste.
In addition to its variety of famous pasta dishes, Red Lion Inn`s extensive menu features appetizers, soups, chicken, veal and steak entrees.
We started with Fried Calamari Rings ($5.50) and Stuffed Cherry Peppers ($4.95). The calamari, fried in a light batter, were tender and seasoned to perfection. The accompanying marinara sauce was homemade and equally delicious. The cherry peppers were generously stuffed with tightly wrapped prosciutto and provolone. They had a very nice bite.
For an entree, I decided on Linguini with White Clam Sauce ($10.95). The light and tasty sauce was loaded with pieces of fresh clams. It was the al dente pasta, however, that really made the dish remarkable. A basket of fresh garlic bread ($2.95) made a wonderful accompaniment.
Lori had Homemade Crab Cakes ($14.50). She chose mixed veggies and a baked potato as her side items. A self-proclaimed expert, she said her crab cakes (made with real crabmeat) were the best she ever tasted.
As an unforgettable ending to a wonderful meal, we shared an Ice Cream Cake Roll ($2.75). To say it was heavenly would be an understatement. Other delectable dessert choices include: Cannolis, Spumoni and assorted pies and cakes, as well as daily specialty desserts.
After experiencing Red Lion`s ambiance, food and unbeatable service, I can see why the restaurant is a favorite for so many. I know I`ll be making the trip again soon.
