SJ Schools: Mainland Regional HS Mainland Regional High School (MRHS) is an academic institution serving more than 1600 students. In the 1997-1998 school year, the United States Department of Education selected MRHS as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The school was also ranked as number 6 in New Jersey and 11th in the nation by Washington Post writer Jay Matthews in his book “Class Struggles: What’s Wrong (and Right) with America’s Best Public High Schools.” MRHS was rated 9th in the nation by Newsweek magazine based on the number of advanced placement tests taken by seniors.

Accompanying its outstanding curriculum, MRHS offers several co-curricular and athletic activities to challenge its students. Students not only perform well academically, but also achieve top ranking in other areas.

Congratulations to Janice Bowman, who overcame all obstacles to earn The Press’ 2003 Softball Player of the Year Award. Transferring from another school as a freshman and the constant change of coaches each year presented a strong challenge to Bowman to achieve this status. Bowman also received a partial softball scholarship and a partial academic scholarship to Drexel University, where she will attend in the fall.

The next Tiger Woods, senior Matt Uretsky ranked in the top ten for the Courier-Post Scholar-Athlete winners in June. He previously played on the American Junior Golf Association Tour, the Future Collegiate World Tour, and the International Junior Golf Tour. Not only is Uretsky keen on the course, he is also a genius in the classroom. Uretsky scored a 1,520 on his SATs and earned a grade point average of 3.925. Uretsky plans to attend Dartmouth in the fall and continue to improve his game.

MHRS was chosen this year to participate in Project 540, a national high school civic initiative. 10,000 students from 24 high schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey participated in civic discussions to facilitate learning politics in the classroom. Students research and provide recommendations for improving youth civic engagement in high schools. Through the program, students can be ‘heard’ within the community and the nation.

Mainland Regional High School’s top students for the 2003 and 2003 school year are Emily Bateman, Shereef Elnahal, Molly Cohen, Jordan Fox, Emily Wolfe, Bianca Caampued, Darin Baumgartel, Elizabeth Gall, Eric Cohen and Matthew Uretsky.
