Man Dead in Bellmawr State police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead in the woods near busy interstate highway in Bellmawr, N.J.

Authorities said they still don't have any clues to the identity of the man who was shot just off Interstate 295, less than a mile south of the Blackhorse Pike.

According to initial reports, around 10 Monday night, the driver of a Honda Accord pulled up behind a Magnolia, N.J.,police car, which was parked along the northbound lanes of 295.

The driver of the Honda wanted directions and when the police officer ran a check on the car, he found out it had been stolen and he tried to make an arrest. The care had been reported stolen in Vineland, N.J., on Monday.

The man drove across the median and started heading southbound when the car stopped working. The unidentified man jumped out of the car and ran into the woods next to the highway. The officer from Magnolia called for help and officers from Lawnside and Haddon Heights responded, along with six New Jersey state troopers.

Investigators said police ran into the woods after the suspect and state troopers shot and killed him.

"I was watching TV and I heard gunshots. I didn't know what it was. It sounded like gunshots to me," said Guy Gigilao of Bellmawr.

Because New Jersey state police were involved, the Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is in charge of the investigation, trying to figure out who shot who, and why.

The man in the Honda did not have any identification on him, so an autopsy is being performed in New Jersey.
