SJ Schools: Cherokee HS

SJ Schools: Cherokee HS Cherokee High School, located in Marlton, serves more than 2000 students in the Lenape Regional High School District. Since 1975, the school has offered a comprehensive curriculum in subjects such as English, math, sciences, world languages and technology. The school also offers an outstanding co-curricular and athletic program for its students, including a locally-broadcast television show and championship athletic teams.

Cherokee High School students have the opportunity to participate in several programs on the local Lenape District TV. The station touts several interesting and informative shows in its programming schedule. Each year, Cherokee students are awarded with an LDTV Web Award for their efforts during the 2002-2003 school year.

Congratulations to the following students: Eric Hermon won for graphics for ‘Good Morning Cherokee.’ Kathryn Morrison won for best interview for the ‘Mrs. Schmidt interview,' best Sports Pack for the Wrestling Update and for best specialty program for ‘Preparing for the College Experience.’ Arden Niessner won for best News Pack for ‘Trebles Ensemble’ and for Best Sports Pack for ‘Wrestling Update.’ Garrett Broad won for the best Sports Announcer for Basketball.

Cherokee students are not only exceptional academic students but also outstanding athletes, breaking school and state records. Congratulations to the following athletes for the 2002-2003 school year:

The Lady Chiefs of Softball had a perfect 28 to 0 record this year. They won the New Jersey State Championships over West Milford thanks to superstar Danielle Cohen, who scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning and threw a 2-hitter to get the pitching win.

The Cherokee Wrestling Team tied the school record this year with five District 27 Wrestling Champions. Congratulations to Voris Tejada, Dave Giamoni, Nick Payne, Matt Dalessio and Nick Denker.

Cherokee’s Diving Team member Natalie Thomas scored two big wins this year finishing 1st place at the SJISA Invitational Diving Championship and 2nd place at the Jim Roach Diving Championships. Congratulations Natalie!

The Boys and Girls Winter Track Team ran to win this year with Jason Chao running his personal best at 51.3 seconds in the 400 meter race at the New York Armory, and the Girls Track Team setting the new school record at the New York Armory when Emily Keller, Ariel Brockman, Grace Pelerin and Malia Lyles shattered the old record.

The Cherokee Girls Softball Team pitched a perfect season this year with a 28 to 0 record. The team is ranked #1 by the Gannett News, the Trentonian, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Newark Star Ledger. The team earned the 2003 New Jersey State Champion title and the Olympic Conference Division Champion title.

The Cherokee Boys and Girls Track and Field teams also shattered records at the Olympic Conference meet this season. Lisa Burkholder won the mile race and the title as the fastest in South Jersey. Malia Lyles won the 2-mile race and recorded the 10th fastest time in Burlington County history. The Boy’s team earned the 2003 Olympic Conference American Division Champion title and Matt Dalessio won the Shot Put title.
