New Jersey Statute: N.J.S. 39:3-10 (Drivers’ Licenses)
Requirements for driver's license
To legally drive a motor vehicle in New Jersey, a driver must have a valid driver's license.
A person may obtain a drivers license if:
- The person is at least 17 years old; and
- The person can pass the driver’s license examination.
Examination Components
The driver's license examination is made up of:
- a vision test;
- a written examination; and
- a road test.
Length of license and cost
A basic New Jersey driver’s license is valid for 48 months from the date issued.
The cost for the basic license is $16.00.
- Regardless of age, a driver’s first New Jersey driver’s license must carry a photo, though each driver may later choose one without a photograph when renewing the license.
- Drivers under 21, must have a photo license.
License to drive other vehicles and fees
To drive other types of motor vehicles, such as a motorcycle or school bus, a driver must take an additional test and pay an additional fee. These additional licenses are called “endorsements”. The fees for endorsements are as follows:
- Motorcycle $13.00
- Omnibus or School Bus $16.00
- Commercial vehicles over 18,000 pounds $ 8.00
Renewals
Every 10 years, a driver is required to take a vision test as a condition of driver’s license renewal.
