Points System
New Jersey Statute: 13:19-10.1 (Point Assessment)
The New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles uses a system of points to track a driver’s driving record. Points are added to the driving record when a driver is found guilty of certain moving violations.
Points for the following violations are:
- Speeding
- Up to 14 MPH above speed limit - 2 points
- 15 – 29 MPH above speed limit - 4 points
- 30 MPH or more above speed limit - 5 points
- Careless Driving - 2 points
- Failure to Obey Traffic Signals or Traffic Officer - 2 points
- Improper Passing - 4 points
- Improper Turns - 3 points
- Leaving the Scene of an Accident where Someone was Injured - 8 points
- Leaving the Scene of an Accident - 2 points
- Reckless Driving - 5 points
- Improperly passing a school bus - 5 points
- Moving violation out of state - 2 points
When a driver accumulates 12 or more points, the Division of Motor Vehicles will suspend that driver’s license. The time that the license is suspended depends upon the total number of points the driver accumulated during a set time period.
The Director of Motor Vehicles may permit a driver to attend a driver improvement program, rather than suspending driving privileges. The fee to attend a driver improvement program is $100.
Up to 3 points will be subtracted from a driver’s driving record for every year that passes without a violation or suspension. However, a driver’s point total can never be less than zero.
