Seat Belts
New Jersey Statute: 39:3-76.2e
(Passenger Automobile Seat Belt Usage Act)
The driver and front seat passenger of a motor vehicle are required to wear seat belts. It is the responsibility of the driver to fasten seat belts for any child between 5 and 18 years old.
The following are exceptions to the seat belt law:
- Passenger vehicles manufactured before July 1, 1966; or
- A driver or front seat passenger who has a written note from that person’s doctor that the person is unable to wear a seat belt for a physical or medical reason; or
- Passenger vehicles that by law do not have to be equipped with seat belts; or
- Passenger vehicles operated by US Mail delivery persons, while delivering the mail.
