Speed limits The speed limits for motor vehicles in New Jersey are as follows:

• 25 Miles per hour (MPH) when driving through a school zone while children are in school or in any business or residential area;
  
• 35 MPH in any suburban business or residential area;
  
• 50 MPH in all other areas and highways unless a 65 MPH speed limit is permitted.

Penalties:
If a driver is issued a summons for speeding, the penalty depends on how much the speed limit was exceeded, and whether or not the driver decides to go to court for the ticket. If a driver pleads guilty without going to Court:

• 1-9 MPH over speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $78; or
    
  • A fine of $133 if the driver received the ticket in a construction zone or 65 M.P.H. speed zone.
  
  
• 10 – 14 MPH over speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $88; or
    
  • A fine of $153 if the driver received the ticket in a construction zone or 65 M.P.H. speed zone.
  
  
• 15- 19 MPH over the speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $98; or
    
  • A fine of $173 if the driver received the ticket in a construction zone or 65 M.P.H. speed zone.
  
  
• 20-24 MPH over the speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $193.
  
  
• 25- 29 MPH over the speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $213.
  
  
• 30-34 MPH over the speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $233.
  
  
• 35 – 39 MPH over the speed limit:
  
  • A fine of $253.

• If the driver was going over 40 MPH above the speed limit, they must make a court appearance, and the court will set the amount of the fine.

If a driver pleads guilty in Court, or the Court finds them guilty after a trial:

• A fine of at least $50 to $200, depending on how much the driver exceeded the speed limit; or
  
• A jail sentence of up to 15 days; or
  
• Both.

Points:

• 1-14 MPH = 2 points
  
• 15-29 MPH = 4 points
  
• Over 30 MPH = 5 points.
