Parking Violations
New Jersey Statute: 39:4-138 (Places where parking prohibited)


Prohibited parking areas
A driver cannot park a motor vehicle in any of the following areas:

  • Within an intersection of 2 or more roads;
  • On a crosswalk;
  • Within a bus stop zone;
  • In front of a public or private driveway;
  • Within 25 feet of a crosswalk;
  • On a sidewalk;
  • Anywhere marked “No Parking” by a state authorized sign;
  • Within 50 feet of a stop sign;
  • Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant;
  • Within 50 feet of a railroad crossing;
  • Within 20 feet of a fire station’s driveway, if parking on the same side of the street, or within 75 feet if parking on the side opposite the fire station;
  • Alongside or opposite any street construction when to park would block traffic;
  • Next to a parked vehicle (double park);
  • On any bridge located on a highway or any highway tunnel or underpass;
  • In a parking space marked for handicapped people, if the car does not have a handicap plate or permit


Penalties:
If the driver is found guilty:
Except for parking in a handicap space, parking offenses generally do not require a court appearance. If a person does not pay parking tickets, or appear in court if ordered to do so, a default judgment can be entered against them, and that person can lose their driver’s license.

For most parking offenses

  • A fine of $44.
For parking in a handicapped parking space only
  • A fine of $50.
