Chief in Prostitution Case to Retire The police chief charged last week with promoting prostitution has told borough officials he intends to retire March 1.

James E. Leason was arrested Jan. 26 at a purported brothel in a Maple Shade apartment complex.

If convicted of promoting prostitution and official misconduct, Leason, 56, could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Authorities said Leason was a regular customer of the brothel. After Leason was charged, he was suspended as police chief.

Lt. Mark Diano, a 28-year veteran of the department, was sworn in Tuesday as acting chief.
