Hands-Free Law Begins July 1

Hands-Free Law Begins July 1 A law banning the use of hand-held cell phones in cars is about to take effect in New Jersey.

Starting July 1, motorists may only use hands-free devices in their cars. It's part of an effort to reduce distractions to drivers.

It is a secondary offense, meaning you can't be stopped just for talking on the phone. But if you are stopped for another violation, you could face a fine.

A spokeswoman for the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission said the fines range from $100 to $250.

Hands-free devices are available at most electronics stores.
