Phillies Over Padres

The Philadelphia Phillies gave Larry Bowa a win in his first game against the team he managed in the late 1980s, with home runs by Travis Lee and Scott Rolen helping beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 Monday night.

Both homers came off Adam Eaton (2-2), who was Philadelphia`s first-round pick in the June 1996 draft.

Philadelphia`s Jimmy Rollins extended his career-best hitting streak to nine games by going 2-for-3, with two runs scored.

San Diego`s Bubba Trammell was 3-for-4 with a homer, double and two RBIs.

Bowa has the Phillies in first place in the NL East in his first managerial job since he was with the Padres. He managed San Diego from 1987 until he was fired on May 28, 1988, after a 16-30 start.

Philadelphia, coming off a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves, handed the Padres their seventh loss in eight games.

Lee, who played at San Diego State, hit a two-run homer in the second to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Mike Lieberthal was aboard on a leadoff single.

Rolen homered with two outs in the third, his third, for a 4-1 lead.

Bruce Chen (1-1) struck out a season-high seven in five innings. He allowed three hits and one run, walking three.

Ricky Bottalico got the last four outs for his first save.

Chen allowed a solo homer to Trammell in the second, then loaded the bases with one out in the fourth before striking out Ben Davis and Donaldo Mendez.

Trammell and Mike Darr hit consecutive RBI doubles in the eighth as the Padres closed to 5-3.

Bobby Abreu and Lieberthal had RBI singles for the Phillies.

Eaton, who has allowed a team-high eight homers, allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings, struck out seven and walked none.

Rickey Henderson drew his 2,061st career walk, leaving him one short of tying Babe Ruth`s record. ... Both starters were in trades that involved Andy Ashby. Eaton, Carlton Loewer and Steve Montgomery came to the Padres for Ashby on Nov. 10, 1999. When the Phillies sent Ashby to Atlanta last July 12, they got Chen and Jimmy Osting. Ashby now pitches for the Dodgers. ... Bowa was 81-127 as Padres manager. When he was fired, he was replaced by general manager Jack McKeon. ... Phillies 2B Marlon Anderson made a nice diving stop of Dave Magadan`s grounder in the seventh and lobbed the ball to SS Rollins to force Mendez.
